Okay that probably wouldn't work. All I can say is google a lot, read some docs, play around with a rom you like, and don't stop until you understand what you need to understand. RHDN also is a good resource.

If you're doing a 6502 variant (NES, PC Engine, or SNES, for example), I most often recommend this http://www.romhacking.net/docs/423/, because while it is long it gives a very good explanation of assembly language concepts from the ground up, which would be very useful if you didn't have a prior programming background in low level languages like C.
